  1. Is this a video game? I don’t know if I understand what the point of this “tour” is and why someone would give so much free time to creating it.

  2. Half Life 2 is a first person shooter (FPS) where you go around with a gun blowing things up. I think this idea would be great for a tour. Most virtual tours drag you involuntarily through, or show you very specific angles. QTVRs are okay, but they’re still point 360s.
I think this is a great application. I’d like to be able to load up a building and have complete control over where I go, how fast I get there, what path I take, and what I look at.
I’d like to see someone have a Half Life deathmatch on this map!
Anyhow, I just posted this on MoCo Loco with props to Grubbykid… Go Grubby!

  3. oh….so it IS a video game then? I’d rather just go to the building and get the real deal but I’m kinda low tech so it might just be me.
    thanks for the info wentz!

  4. Well, it’s all find and good for you to get in a car/plane and go to Pennsylvania for a day, but I guess I was thinking about accessibility, research, etc. The ease at which someone could pull up any historical building and have a perfect walkthrough of it? That’s pretty great. Of course it doens’t replace actual experience, but could be a superior reference tool.

  5. Hi, I’m the author of the map. If you have the HL2 game, you can download the map here.
As an anecdote, I must admit I haven’t been to Fallingwater yet, since I live in Madrid and it’s quite a long trip to Pennsylvania. I had to use over 200 reference photos to make it look similar.

  6. This is so great, I can’t even begin to think how long it took to make this. I think this shows how well some FPS’s rendering engines have become. We put the DAAP building into Unreal Tournament and it was very satisfying to play in.
I’ve heard of firms using Unreal and Half Life as walk-though engines for clients by importing files from 3d Studio, Maya, etc.
