As we were driving out of Savannah’s Historic Center on Abercorn Street, it struck me that moving away from the river the newer the city became. This is similar to the settlement of Manhattan as you go from the southern tip to the northern edge.
The above diagram illustrates this history in a simplified manner. The named cross street is generally where I was able to discern a change in style and age of buildings. Of course, infilling and new construction throws off the age of construction, but the diagram is a good representation of what is going on as you travel down Abercorn Street.
