You no doubt have noticed that I’ve added Google AdSense advertisements to Smogr. This is an experiment in seeing if I can begin supporting myself more on my writing.
We shall see – expect changes soon…
Saul Bass – Bad Ass Motherfucker
Saul Bass, originally uploaded by Xavier Encinas
Saul Bass, 1977 Art Directors Club Hall of Fame entry:
From the very beginning of his career, painting signs on store windows in the Bronx while attending high school, Bass learned respect for craft and process. “The failure to deal with these issues is one of the irritating weaknesses of today’s educational system.”
Largely self-taught, he is careful to give credit to those influences who opened conceptual doors: Howard Trafton at the Art Students League and particularly Gyorgy Kepes at Brooklyn College. (Kepes returned the compliment by including a chapter on Bass in his comprehensive six-volume Vision and Value .)
If you had designed everything behind Mr. Bass, and were able to pull off both a mustache and the mock turtleneck, you too could graduate to the nickname of Bad Ass Motherfucker (wallet included).
Hugh Ferriss Photo Bonanza

Check out the Hugh Ferriss from the Avery Collection photo set (example above) and a long article about Feriss’ lasting impression on Gotham, Hugh Ferriss: Delineator of Gotham:
Picked up a reprinting of a 1929 book by Hugh Ferriss titled The Metropolis of Tomorrow. Ferriss was the preeminent architectural draftsman of his time who through his moody chiaroscuro renderings of skyscrapers virtually inventing the image of Gotham visitors came to the city to see and residents identified with so fondly.

Yonkers Power Station – Preservation League Announcement
Power Station, originally uploaded by earthmagnified
I just received this from Rob Yasinsac who runs Hudson Valley Ruins website regarding the Yonkers Power Station:
I thought that you would be interested in some news regarding the Yonkers Power Station. If you have not heard, the developer who announced plans in early 2007 to build vast condo towers above the power station backed out in December. The power station still remains vulnerable to insensitive redevelopment or destruction, and the Yonkers City Council has sat on our Local Landmark application for two-and-a-half years now. The Preservation League of New York, myself and others will have an announcement this Wednesday regarding advocacy efforts in the interest of the power station (details below). Sorry about getting this out to you on short notice but, if you can, please join us in a show of support for the preservation of this incredible building.
Full press release below the fold.
